Just the stats Ma'm! TheMissouri Katy Trail

The following are the stats for the Katy Trail which we rode from 4/22/10 to 4/29/10. Read the Stoker's blog for an exciting description of our ride.

St Charles to Augusta MO - 32 miles; Thursday 4/22/10. Warm sunny day; no wind; mean speed = 9.9 mph; trail conditions good but dusty.  The Lewis and Clark Trail and the Katy trail overlap until Boonville. The trail provides a lot of interpretive signs regarding their historical trek up the Missouri. As we approached Augusta we met many artists along the trail painting the Katy Trail.

Augusta to Hermann MO - 40.4 miles; Friday 4/23/10.Mean = 10.0 mph. Some drizzle but no hard rain, warm; trail less dusty, gravel thicker in some places. Stopped at a winery for a wine tasting and had a great sandwich in Peers MO. There are several old RR bridges along the trail that spanned the many creeks. George is pacing out the length of this one.

Hermann to Jefferson City MO - 47.3 miles; Saturday 4/24/10; Mean speed = 9.7 mph. Drizzled all morning but temperature was dropping. Glad to find warm lunch in Mokane MO.  There were many interesting sites along the path. As the drizzle turned into a light rain the gravel bike path became softer and harder to peddle. At mid-afternoon about 6 miles from our stop for the night the winds picked up and the rain became a torrential downpour. The tires dug down and a piece of gravel cut the tire resulting in a blow-out.

Sunday 4/25/10 - spent in Jefferson City to give us and the trail time to dry out. Much of the trail would have been flooded had we continued. Sunday was a light cold drizzle, temperature in the high 50s.

Jefferson City to Rocheport MO - 41 miles; mean 9.5 mph; Monday 4/26/10. Overcast skies, temperature in the low 60s, moderate wind, no rain but rough trail conditions. In many cases the trail was washed out, but passable on foot, and while not as soggy as during a heavy rain it was wet and tough riding.

Rocheport to Boonville MO - 14.7 miles; mean 8.4 mph; Tuesday 2/27/10. Overcast and still colder, but dry. Nice easy ride and we took our time riding into Rocheport. This was the prettiest part of the trip, much to look at such as the structure the MKT railroad built to store dynamite.  We also saw petroglyphs.

Boonville to Sedalia MO - 38.7 miles, mean 9.5 mph; Wednesday 4/28/10; sunny day, warming temperatures, trail drying out and pleasant ride. Wind picking up but not direct headwind.

Sedalia to Clinton - 41.3 miles, mean 9.4 mph; Thursday 4/29/10; sunny, warm day but terrific headwinds the entire trip. Winds were 25 to 30 mph, gusting up to at least 35 mph. The winds made forward travel very difficult. We put our heads down and peddled without much sight seeing, but we did stop to get our picture taken by other travelers at the highest point on the trail; 955 ft.
