We have just finished five days of camping and biking in an area nestled between the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers that is known as the Land Between the Lakes. This area is incredibly beautiful with pristine campsites. The weather was perfect, warm days with cool evenings. Therefore, we made a campfire every night and on a couple of cold mornings. We spent the days biking the back country roads and rarely encountered any cars. However, we did encounter a few dogs; but that is another story.
The Sunday morning we broke camp was particularly chilly (for a Floridian) so we built a fire and enjoyed a leisurely morning with coffee warming our feet by the fire. At mid morning, we packed up the car and drove about 20 miles to the next town in search of brunch and a hotel with a laundromat. We pulled into a Bob Evans Restaurant already tasting the biscuits, eggs and coffee! Everyone was looking at us and George attributed it to my strange attire - leggings under a skirt, sandals, and a sweater. Okay - I looked a tad weird, but they were the only assemblage of relatively clean clothes I could pull together. But it got worse, as we noticed that nearly everyone was in their 'go to church clothes' as this Bob Evans was apparently the local Sunday Brunch destination.
We settled into our booth and our young waitress, as fresh and clean as the dew of a summer morning smiled as she poured our coffee, took our order and asked 'Have y'all been camping?'. Lulled into complacency by that sweet southern accent - we affirmed in unison by shaking our heads while smiling back. She nodded and as she turned to put in our order said, 'Thought so - I could smell the smoke on you'. At that point we realized the entire restaurant could also probably smell the smoke - and now fully aware, we smelled it as well! Slinking down into the booth we ate our brunch silently so we could quickly escape to the confinement of our car where we could roll the windows down.
Ride on!
